Quintessential British Pub with an Indian Twist @ The Whitefield Arms Pub
The Whitefield Arms Pub prides itself to be a Quintessential British Pub and is a new entrant to the Pub capital of India aka Namma Bengaluru. The word ‘Quintessential’ means being the perfect example of quality and class! After dining and enjoying a relaxing Sunday afternoon here, I have to say the management have hit the right notes with this one.
Did you know Whitefield is a suburb named after D S White, the founder of Eurasian and Anglo Indian Association?
Located inside VR Bengaluru Mall, The Whitefield Arms has a café section and the Pub. You can use the separate entrance from the main road, that leads directly to the Pub. For those early rise shopaholics, you could take advantage of enjoying a hearty breakfast along with your morning coffee before your shopping haul. For those late risers and those like me, who prefer to just laze whilst the rest do the shopping, you could sit down at the pub and enjoy their fully stocked bar and loaded pub grub menu.
Old World Vibe and Charm!
The ambience is very colonial and contemporary, and based on the history of Whitefield and the Victorian era. The pub has been done up very tastefully with themed wooden furniture. My favourite spot has to be the open outdoor seating, just perfect as it takes advantage of Bangalore’s weather. It faces away from the main road; you can oversee the Phoenix Mall next door. For the history fanatics and the likes there is a lot to digest over the facts about Whitefield, all over good food and drinks.
What’s in my Glass?
The drinks menu is extensive and has a very surreal appeal to it, again a lot of history tied down to Bangalore. Brownie points for naming the drinks…very fancy! The wine list is a little swankier, and I loved the ‘Wall of Wine’. As it was a Sunday, I decided to go in for the special cocktails listed off the menu, each sip had a punch to it. Love the quotes on the coasters.
LAVELLE (Ketel One Vodka, Gin, Shaken, Ice Cold with Butter Scotch & Honey) – In memory of the Irish soldier, Michael Lavelle, behind the Kolar Gold Fields. The butter scotch was the best, it was quite warm in the afternoon and to start this was just a delight, the butter scotch was just the right amount. You can get a subtle hit of Gin. I liked the silver beads floating around. Ladies do not give this a miss!
COLONIAL (Gin, Grapefruit, Cherry & Elder flower) – Ever been to Pondicherry and visited the French? No! Experience this… wakes up your taste buds getting you ready for a damn fine meal. Light, refreshing and delicious. The treat was eating the cherries at the end!
QUEEN’S PARK SWIZZLE – A Trinidadian Concoction described as the most delightful form of anesthesia (Muddled Lime, Mint, Sugar Crushed Ice topped with Rum and Red Wine). This is a definite for the fine drinkers out there, you get the taste of the Red Wine, the drink is very deceiving as this is quite potent and you don’t feel the rum until the end. So careful with this one.
PASSION FRUIT PUNCH – I love fruity, tropical drinks. This one was just a Mocktail, I had to keep my senses awake after all those drinks above.
What’s on my Plate?
The menu is traditional pub grub that has been kicked up a notch to suit every palate, this I guarantee! The food has an Indian twist to some of the dishes and its sauces and gravies. Love, Love. I have to say after seeing the menu and you have to come very hungry, see for yourself…
GRILLED HONEY – CHILLI BEEF (Grilled Marinated Beef in Honey, Soy and Chilli) – For the love of Beef, I mean this was orgasmic, a food lover’s delight. The sweetness of the honey and slight hint of chilli and soy, was meat was marinated and perfectly grilled. This is highly recommended if you eat Beef!
BARRACK’S SPECIAL (Coriander and Mint Marinated Grilled Chicken Thigh, Saffron Yogurt and Coriander Dip) – The tender pieces of Chicken were calling out to eat me…again not over cooked. You are supposed to eat it in one mouthful but that is definitely not easy and it’s quite easy to mess up. I cut it into half.
TWICE- COOKED PORK BELLY (Hoisin, Curry Leaves and Green Chilli) – This is food for the soul, there are pub grubs but this was simply divine. The Pork Belly was so succulent and melted away. An Indian twist with the curry leaves. Again, highly recommended if you eat Pork!
MELTING HOGGET SLIDER – Spiced lamb Rillettes with Cucumber Mint Labneh, Kachumbari Salad and Brioche – A must! Big in flavour, small in size, Perfecto!
COPPER KNOB (Spicy Crispy Chicken Burger with grilled onions, Tomatoes, English cheddar cheese and arugula). This is a classic, I liked the crispy chicken, the margination had a curry flavour to it, and the grilled onions just blended well to make it a juicy burger!
For the Sweet Tooth
As you can see from the images below, the desserts were absolutely sinful, I had both, although by now I was super full and over stuffed. The plating was just in the right portion. Love the Tea Crème Brulee!
STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING – This dessert was a rich chocolate cake topped with thick sticky toffee sauce. The Vanilla ice cream, was melting away as I took pictures, so I had to really rush into eating my dessert! Highly Recommended for toffee lover or any one who loves a good dessert after a hearty meal!
SPICED TEA CRÈME BRULEE – This dessert was so pretty to look at. The Tea Custard in the cup was divine. The biscuits were like how my Mom used to bake them. If I could, I would have eaten these on its own!
For a foodie like me, the rest of the Menu beckons to explore! If it is going to be anything from what I tasted above, then another trip to the Pub is must. Compliments to the Chef for serving simple, authentic and tasty dishes, again loved the presentation. The service was matched. The Whitefield Arms Pub is a microbrewery, for the beer lover’s and Moi included, we need to hold our breath, as the brewery should be operational in another couple of months (Gasp!).
